Former Head of Art at Wells Cathedral School, Jan’s art practice looks at the transformativeprocess that takes place between a domestic place and a creative space, the studio.
The methodology used involves working from a ‘home’ situation exclusively in 2D and thentransposing these drawings into paintings and sculpture in the studio. The drawings are based ondomestic paraphernalia , initially observational but more often, direct variations/distortions andinventions based on original looking.
In the studio, the notion of play and exploration take over with a variety of materials includingcard, wood and painted canvas. Colour and painted surfaces play a part in this personal world.The cartography of shapes and motifs Jan has developed in her practice are quite specific andtransforming these individual symbols into a collective unit requires manoeuvring. Spontaneityand ‘conversations’ between the sculpture and the paintings form a theatre like setting as thoughthe shapes have escaped their two dimensional home.
Using multiple elements and a painterly approach, allows for different relationships to be createdbetween the paintings and sculpture.
