Lorraine Houston was born in London moving to the south coast to study for a B.A fine art sculpture and ceramics.

After a postgraduate year in Brighton, she taught for many years in Secondary education. Lorraine has tutored adult art groups and exhibited her paintings locally and also Bristol.

Lorraine paints in oils building up thin layers of colour using Michael Harding paint. In her recent work there is often no plan only a response to the image as she works on it, the end result often surprises me and the meaning is revealed. Life drawing has played a large part of Lorraine’s creative practise therefore many of my paintings suggest a figure which becomes part of an imaginary internal space. She often work on several paintings simultaneously one image informing the other. The pandemic has shifted her focus and opportunity for a more meditative approach.
